Late Seattle Goal Sends Cal Poly to 2-1 Loss Friday Evening

SEATTLE – Junior forward George Grote's first goal for the Cal Poly men's soccer program in three seasons leveled the scoreline at Seattle Friday evening, but an 82nd-minute strike from Redhawks forward Connor Noblat helped send the Mustangs to a 2-1 defeat at Championship Field.

Senior goalkeeper Simon Boehme recorded a season high nine saves for Cal Poly (1-1-1), which trailed Seattle, 1-0, entering the 79th minute. Sophomore midfielder Emmanuel Perez, however, latched onto a turnover in front of Seattle's penalty area before slipping a pass to his left for Grote (above), who fired past Redhawks goalkeeper Josh Adachi into the right corner of the net.

The goal was Grote's first since Nov. 11, 2015, when he found the back of the net in a Big West Conference Tournament semifinal matchup at Cal State Fullerton.

Seattle, however, surged back ahead just two-and-a-half minutes later. Having entered the match just 13 minutes prior, Noblat produced the game-winning goal, first corralling a loose ball at the right edge of the Mustang penalty area before dribbling toward goal and firing past Boehme into the upper left corner.

Cal Poly continues its five-game road trip and closes its three-match Pacific Northwest tour at Portland on Monday, Sept. 3. Kickoff time is 7 p.m.

Friday's first shot attempt from either side elicited a 13th-minute save from Boehme and Cal Poly's goalkeeper chalked up his second stop on 26 minutes to keep Friday's matchup scoreless early.

Offensively, Cal Poly was kept without an attempt until junior midfielder Diego Alonso produced a 30th-minute stop from distance by Adachi. Grote was then turned away four minutes later.

Seattle, however, found the back of net first on Friday in the 42nd minute as sophomore Gabriel Ruiz sent a cross in from the right side of Cal Poly's penalty area for fellow midfielder Hamish Ritchie, who slotted past Boehme from 15 yards.

Into the second half, Boehme chalked up his third save in the 52nd before making three more stops in the ensuing 12 minutes to keep Cal Poly's deficit at 1-0 until Grote found the equalizer.
