SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior midfielder Emmanuel Perez (above) produced his second career two-goal game on Sunday afternoon and junior forward Angel De Leon scored his first goal in two seasons as the Cal Poly men's soccer program secured a 3-1 home victory versus Gonzaga inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Perez, who scored the finale in Cal Poly's 3-0 victory versus Fresno Pacific on Tuesday, produced Sunday's opener in the 26th minute (above). Graduate midfielder Colin Hyatt earned the assist after flicking a pass into the penalty area for Perez, who lofted the goal over Gonzaga goalkeeper Johan Garibay.
Perez doubled Cal Poly's lead 11 minutes into the second half. Senior midfielder Diego Alonso picked up his eighth career assist after crossing from the right for Perez, who bested multiple Gonzaga defenders in a scramble before firing into the back of the net from 10 yards.
The brace was Perez's first since scoring twice during a 4-1 home win against Fresno Pacific to open the 2018 season.
Fourteen minutes from full time, De Leon enjoyed his first goal since a 3-2, overtime win at UC Davis on Oct. 18, 2017. Crossing from the right, Mustang junior defender Jackson Brady found De Leon, who headed past Garibay from 12 yards.
Cal Poly held Gonzaga without a shot on goal for the opening 80 minutes before junior Jason Hernandez turned away Bulldogs defender Cole Rovigo. Gonzaga thwarted Cal Poly's shutout in the 84th, however, after forward Demetrius Kaseya's attempt skipped off Hernandez.
The Mustangs placed 15 of their 10 shots on target.
Cal Poly resumes action on Thursday, Sept. 19 with game No. 3 of a five-match home stand versus NAIA Westmont. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
