Cal Poly Advances to Big West Conference Championship Final

INDIAN WELLS – The Cal Poly men's tennis team advanced to the Big West Conference Tournament Championship Final after beating UC Davis 4-2 on Friday afternoon in Indian Wells, Calif.

"Just an amazing team win today," said head coach Nick Carless. "Garrett Auproux put the team on his shoulders from the beginning of doubles and never looked back. He's had a tough senior year but has never given up on the team or himself and that's really what sport is about. Words cannot describe how proud I am of him."

After beating UC Riverside in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament, Cal Poly kept its momentum going when it took on the Aggies in the semifinals.

The Mustangs started the match off with doubles play, where Karl Enander and Tim Tan were beat by Bryce McKelvie and James Wade 6-1 on court two.

Corey Pang and Ben Donovan evened things back out after they beat Tommy Lam and David Goulak 6-2 on court one.

Garrett Auproux and Axel Damiens clinched the match for the Mustangs after beating Alec Adamson and Everett Maltby 6-4 on court three.

Up 1-0, Auproux put the first singles point on the board, as he beat McKelvie on court three 6-4, 6-4.

Pang put another point on the board after he beat Alec Adamson on court one 6-4, 6-4, giving the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.

Donovan battled Wade, but couldn't hold on, as he fell 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, while Josh Ortlip pushed Maltby to three sets but fell 6-7, (5-7), 6-2, 6-4, giving the Aggies their second point.

Antoine Noel clinched the match for the Mustangs, as he beat Max Pham on court six 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

"Antoine clinching the match shows he's the best freshman in the conference and he played amazing tennis at the end of the match to get the clinch," said Carless.

The Mustangs' win advances them to the final round of the tournament, where they will take on the No. 1 seed UCSB on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.

Cal Poly took on the Gauchos in its last regular season match, where it fell 5-2. This will be the second year in a row that the Mustangs will meet with UCSB in the conference finals. Last season, the Mustangs fell 4-1.
