Men’s Tennis’ Bechard, Ortlip Pick Up Wins at Battle in the Bay Tourney

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Cal Poly men's tennis seniors Josh Ortlip and Dominic Bechard collected three singles wins over the weekend at the Battle in the Bay Tournament, the team's first tournament of the fall.

The two played against players from some of the top programs in the country, including USC, Georgia, TCU, CAL, Michigan, Texas Tech, Stanford, Texas, Wake Forest, USF, Pacific, SDSU, UCSB, USD, Fresno State and Hawaii.

On day one, Bechard defeated TCU's Bertus Kruger 6-3, 2-6, 12-10. He fell in the second round to Cal's Yuta Kikuchi 7-5, 6-4 to move to the consolation bracket.

In the consolation rounds, Ortlip collected two wins. He first defeated Wake Forest's Alan Gadjiev 6-3, 3-6, 10-7. He then took down Pacific's Tadiwa Chinamo 6-4, 6-4.

On Sunday, Bechard fell to Fresno State's Cagatay Soke 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 and Ortlip was defeated by Michigan's Andrew Fenty 6-1, 6-0.

The Mustangs' next tournament will be the UCSB Classic October 5-7.
