Stater, Noel Shine for Men’s Tennis at UCSB Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Sophomore Alex Stater reached the championship match of the Flight C Singles and junior Antoine Noel made it to the semifinal of a strong Flight A Singles to highlight the Cal Poly men's tennis weekend at the UCSB Classic.

Competing against players from some of the top schools on the west coast, the Mustangs picked up wins over guys from PAC-12 and West Coast Conference schools, among others.

In total, seven Mustangs, including two freshmen won at least one singles match and all three of their doubles' tandems won at least one match.

To reach the championship of the Flight C Singles, Stater first took down Fresno State's Patrick Pech 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. He then defeated UC Davis' Alex Scemanenco 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the semifinal. There, he beat the Gauchos' Will Saiga 6-4, 6-3 to reach the championship, falling in a three-set battle to Cal's Can Kaya 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Playing against some of the top players from the PAC-12 in Flight A Singles, Noel was able to reach the semifinals by first beating Washington's Ernesto Turegano 7-5, 6-2. He then took down Oregon's Emmanuel Coste in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semifinal, falling to Stanford's Will Genesen 6-1, 7-6.

"Antoine and Alex picked up some tough wins both advancing deep in their respective draws," head coach Nick Carless said of Noel's and Stater's weekend. "While they both would have like to win on Sunday, I'm happy to see some of their hard work this summer paying off for them early in the season."

Other Mustangs who picked up singles wins were redshirt freshman Daly Meinert, who beat Oregon's Ethan Young-Smith 6-1, 7-6 in Flight B Singles after falling in his first match. Also in Flight B Singles, freshman Karapet Vardanyan won two matches in a row after losing his first match. He first beat Washington's Alexis Alvarez and followed that with a win over UC Davis' David Goulak 6-3, 6-2.

Freshman Cambell Nakayama and sophomore Andrew Whitehouse both picked up one win apiece in Flight C Singles. Nakayama defeated UC Davis' Dariush Jalali 6-2, 6-3 and Whitehouse also beat Jalali 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.

In D Flight Singles, sophomore Roman Shenkiryk won two matches. He first beat LMU's Cartier Juan 6-4, 6-2. He then recorded a victory over LMU's Ryan Brown 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles, the tandem of Meinert and Noel picked up an 8-4 win over Stanford's Perera and Genender. The duo of Vardanyan and Nakayama won their match 8-7 (5) over Fresno State's Pech and Derkas. The other Mustang doubles team of Stater and Shenkiryk won their match over UC Davis' Jalali and Jayaraman 8-4.

"Our doubles play was strong throughout the weekend," Carless said. "I'm excited about some of the pairings, the styles and the aggressiveness in which the guys competed."

Cal Poly next competes at the ITA Southwest Regionals in Malibu starting October 18.
