SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team announced that five-star recruit Fernando Fonseca has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his tennis and academic career at Cal Poly starting in the fall of 2019.

Fonseca, a native a Brazil, will join the Mustangs after finishing his prep career at Weil Preparatory Academy in Ojai, Calif.

He is a ranked as the 66th best player in his class in the country by tennisrecruiting.net. He had a good run in the ITA circuit last summer, where he qualified for the national summer championship. He's also won the Top Gun Tournament, beating a former top-15 ranked ITF player.

"I couldn't be happier to have Fernando joining the team," head coach Nick Carless said. "We recruited him for a long time and are happy to see him officially a become part of the Mustang family. Fernando is a tough competitor, knows how to win, is extremely tough from the baseline and with a lot of international experience that will translate well as a college player. He has a great foundation to work with once he gets here and should help our program immediately next fall."

Fonseca said he chose Cal Poly "because I loved the coaches and people. I also really liked the campus and its academics are really strong in the areas I want to study."

Following the 2019 season, Cal Poly will lose two seniors to graduation.
