Cal Poly Men’s Tennis Tops San Francisco 4-1 in Home Opener Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team won four singles matches in a row on its way to a 4-1 home opener victory Friday over San Francisco.

The Mustangs (3-3) bounced back in singles after the Dons (1-2) took the doubles point. Junior Antoine Noel and redshirt freshman Daly Meinert won their match at the No. 3 spot 6-2 for their second win of the season. San Francisco won on both courts 1 and 2 to win the doubles point.

In singles, freshman Gary Vardanyan got things started for Cal Poly at the No. 4 position, continuing his strong start to the season. Vardanyan won his match in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to remain undefeated in singles for the season at 5-0.

Freshman Cambell Nakayama then won his match at the No. 6 spot in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 for his first singles win as a Mustang. Sophomore Alex Stater (pictured) followed that with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win at the No. 5 position to give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead.

Senior Dominic Bechard closed things out for Cal Poly after a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot to complete the 4-1 victory.

Although their matches did not finish, both senior Josh Ortlip and Noel both appeared to be on their way to wins matches when the match was called. Orltip was winning at the No. 1 position 6-4, 5-4 and Noel was winning at the No. 2 spot 6-2, 4-6, 4-1.

Cal Poly heads to Fresno State for a road match against the Bulldogs Saturday at 1 p.m.
