SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After taking home the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student Athlete of th Week Monday for a second consecutive week, junior men's tennis player Antoine Noel (pictured) earned Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week Wednesday after he won both his singles and doubles matches to help the Mustangs upset No. 50 Utah last weekend.
He becomes the third Mustang men's player this season to take home the award. Senior Josh Ortlip and freshman Gary Vardanayan both won the award earlier this season.
The Mustangs took down the Utes 5-2 Saturday at Mustang Tennis Complex, their most impressive win of the season, to get their record back to over .500 at 6-5.
Noel and freshman Gary Vardanyan won their match at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, to help the Mustangs secure the doubles point. The duo is now 3-1 since becoming a pair and have won three in a row.
Noel then won his match at No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. With the win, he improved his singles record to 7-2 and is riding a three-match winning streak.
The men's tennis team will play the last of its five-match home stand Friday when it hosts Nevada at 10 a.m. from Mustang Tennis Complex. After that, the Mustangs hit the road to face New Mexico on Sunday at noon.
