Cal Poly Men’s Tennis Hosts UC Riverside For Saturday Dual Match
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Having won four of its last five matches, the Cal Poly men's tennis team will look to keep its recent success going this weekend when it hosts Big West foe UC Riverside before going on the road to take on Santa Clara.

The Mustangs (11-7, 2-0 BWC) will host the Highlanders (18-11, 1-1 BWC) Saturday at 10 a.m. from Mustang Tennis Complex. Admission is free to everyone. Following that match, Cal Poly will travel to Santa Clara (12-6, 3-3 WCC) for a makeup match on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Cal Poly, which is coming off two road wins last weekend against UC Davis and the University of Pacific, is currently in first place in the Big West with UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside all close behind.

In singles, the Mustangs boast four guys who have won at least 10 dual matches this season. Senior Josh Ortlip and sophomore Alex Stater are tied for the most wins with 11 each. Junior Antoine Noel and freshman Gary Vardanyan have each won 10 matches.

In doubles, Vardanyan and Noel have been the best pair. They are a team-best 7-3 this season at the No. 2 and No. 3 position.

The Highlanders are coming off a loss to UC Irvine and a win over Hawai'i last weekend. They are currently in fourth place in the Big West. The Mustangs have won their last 10 matches against UC Riverside and have never lost under head coach Nick Carless. So far this season, Cal Poly is 6-1 at home.

The road match with the Broncos is a makeup match after the original contest March 2nd had to be postponed due to rain. Santa Clara is 7-1 at home this season and is coming off back-to-back losses to San Diego State and San Diego.

Following this weekend, the Mustangs will have one home match remaining. That will be next Friday, April 19 at noon against Hawai'i.
