Cal Poly Men’s Tennis Falls at UCSB in Regular Season Finale

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis program fell on the road to UC Santa Barbara 4-0 in its regular season finale Saturday to finish in second place in the Big West.

By finishing in second, the Mustangs (13-9, 4-1 BWC) will have a first round bye in next weekend's Big West Tournament.

The Gauchos (13-6, 4-0 BWC) won the doubles point after the No. 1 pairing of Anders Holm and Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, the 72nd ranked doubles tandem in the country, defeated seniors Josh Ortlip and Dominic Bechard 6-4 and the No. 3 pairing of Alex Soto and Joseph Rotheram beat sophomores Andrew Whitehouse and Roman Shenkiryk 6-2.

In singles, Moreno de Alboran, the ITA's 15th ranked singles player in the country, beat Ortlip 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. Holm then beat Shenkiryk 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 position. UCSB's Hironori Koyanagi beat freshman Gary Vardanyan 6-1, 6-4 to seal the match.

With the regular season now over, the Mustangs get ready to compete in next weeken's Big West Tournament at Indian Wells in Palm Springs, Calif. The tournament starts Thursday, April 25 and runs through Sunday, April 28. Cal Poly has made it to the championship match seven of the last eight seasons. Last year, the Mustangs fell to the Gauchos in the championship.
