SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team competed in its second event of the fall this past weekend at the UCSB Classic and once again had a strong showing, highlighted by sophomore Cambell Nakayama (pictured) winning Flight C singles title.
Playing against players from schools from the Big West, PAC 12, Mountain West, and West Coast Conferene, Nakayama beat Oregon's Evan Felcher in the championship match in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 to take home the title.
Elsewhere, freshman Fernando Fonseca made it all the way to the finals of the Flight B singles bracket before falling to Oregon's Brandon Lam 6-7, 3-6.
Senior Antoine Noel finished his weekend with a 6-3, 6-3 win over UCLA's Eric Hahn in the consolation of the Flight A bracket. Junior Alex Stater also won his final match of the weekend, defeating Stanford's Kento Perera 6-3, 4-1 (ret.) in the consolation draw of the Flight A draw.
In doubles, the duo of Fonseca and junior Roman Shenkiryk made it to the finals of the Flight B bracket before falling to a tandem from Stanford, 8-7(8).
The Mustangs will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule this week when they travel down to Malibu for the ITA Southwest Regionals starting Thursday and going through Monday.
