Johnson joined the men's tennis program as assistant coach in August of 2019.
Johnson is a former standout player at USC. During his time there, he was part of three national championship-winning teams. In 2014, Johnson was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team after his undefeated singles play helped the Trojans claim the 2014 NCAA Championship. During his senior year, Johnson was team captain and played in the top lineup spots. He also earned PAC-12 All-Academic Honors and represented the United States at the University Games in Russia.
Prior to joining the Mustang coaching staff, Johnson wrapped up a successful run as a professional on the ATP tour, winning tournaments in both Israel and Greece. He held an ATP ranking as high as 507.
"Eric's background as a player with his experiences both at USC and on the ATP tour will be of tremendous value for the development of our players," Carless said. "I've known Eric since his days as a junior tennis player out of Northern California and know what a knowledgeable, hard-working, honest, good natured guy our program is getting as a young coach. I couldn't be more excited to welcome him to the Mustang family."
Johnson has been a staple of the tennis community in California for a long time. He was ranked as the top junior player in northern California in both singles and doubles in the 10-18 age range and was a blue-chip recruit coming out of high school.
"I couldn't be more excited to become a part of the Mustang family," Johnson said. "I am truly grateful for the opportunity to coach at such an amazing school that is backed by a very supportive tennis community. I've known and respected Coach Carless for several years and am very fortunate to be able learn under his leadership. I look forward to sharing my lifelong passion and knowledge of tennis with the team and having a great year."
Originally from San Jose, California, Johnson attended Bellarmine Prep for his first two years before finishing at the Laurel Springs School. He graduated from USC in 2015 with a degree in accounting.
