Mustang Softball Caps Big West Preparations Sunday at CSU Bakersfield

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly softball program completes preparations for its 17th season of Big West Conference action when visiting CSU Bakersfield for a 12 noon doubleheader on Sunday, March 17. Live stats of both contests will be available HERE.

Cal Poly, which improved to 9-16-1 this season after winning four of six games at the program's own March 8-10 Mustang Classic, has faced CSU Bakersfield sparsely at the Division I level. Just 2-1 against CSU Bakersfield (2-13) at the Division I level, Cal Poly dealt the Roadrunners a 5-4 defeat during the last meeting between the two programs on March 14, 2010. The two sides also split a doubleheader on April 27, 1995.

Individually, Mustang sophomore lefthander Chloe Wurst (6-6-1) enters Sunday's doubleheader ranked second among Big West pitchers in innings pitched (87.2), fifth in starts (13) and sixth in strikeouts (68) and ERA (2.40). Wurst, who has recorded three of her six victories against ranked opponents, also features a 3.6-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and is averaging 0.77 strikeouts per inning.

Offensively, freshman first baseman Breana West – after hitting .444 (8-for-18) during Cal Poly's last seven games – enters weekend action with a team-leading .323 batting average. West, who leads Cal Poly with seven multi-hit games, has started 25 of 26 games at first base and paces every Big West player with 196 putouts.

Aside from hitting .316, junior shortstop Kim Westlund enters Cal Poly's Sunday doubleheader leading the Mustangs with 13 RBI and 28 total bases. She also ranks fourth among Big West players with 14 walks and ninth with 24 hits. Defensively, Westlund has started all 26 games for the Mustangs and paces all conference performances with 72 assists.

Batting from the leadoff spot in the lineup, junior second baseman Ashley Romano has reached safely in 23 of 26 games this season and enters Sunday's doubleheader having hit safely in 10 of the previous 13 games. She also ranks fifth among Big West players in runs (18) and sixth in walks (12).

Looking ahead, Cal Poly opens its Big West schedule by hosting Long Beach State (15-10) for a 12 noon doubleheader on Saturday, March 23. The series concludes with a 12 noon single game the following day. Cal Poly's five-game home stand at Bob Janssen Field finishes with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Fresno State (16-11) on Monday, March 25.
