STANFORD – Senior right fielder Crimson Kaiser's first home run of 2019 helped the Cal Poly softball program trim into Stanford's early lead on Sunday afternoon, but the host Cardinal produced 17 hits as the Mustangs closed the Stanford Invitational with a 13-5 loss.
The Cardinal struck first during Sunday's matchup in the bottom of the first inning through run-scoring doubles from second baseman Emily Klingaman and first baseman Whitney Burks.
Held to a solitary hit during the first, Cal Poly opened the second with the leadoff homer from Kaiser (above).
Stanford, however, countered with four runs during its half of the second as third baseman Kristina Inouye swatted a grand slam to left field to hand the Cardinal a 6-1 advantage.
The Mustangs halved Stanford's lead once more in the top of the third with senior catcher Makenna Young following senior third baseman Noa Yakir's leadoff double with an RBI single up the middle of the infield. Freshman shortstop Maddie Amos later drew a bases-loaded walk to force home junior first baseman Hailey Martin to cut Stanford's lead to 6-3.
The Cardinal, however, expanded their advantage once in the bottom half of the third with a four-run effort.
Trailing 10-3, Cal Poly added its final two runs in the top of the fifth as Kaiser doubled home Young and freshman designated player Lily Amos plated Martin with a sacrifice fly.
The Cardinal added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to close the scoring.
Young led Cal Poly with three hits versus Stanford.
