SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore center fielder Noellah Ramos (above) collected three of the Cal Poly softball team's four hits Friday afternoon, but her side opened the program's 14-game home schedule and own ShareSLO Mustang Classic tournament with a 4-2 loss to Iowa State. Cal Poly also fell in game No. 2 of its Friday doubleheader to Utah State, 4-0.
During Friday's opening matchup versus Iowa State (10-9), the Cyclones began the scoring in the top of the first inning as third baseman Mikayla Ramos produced a one-out single to left field to bring home shortstop Sami Williams.
Cal Poly starting lefthander Krystyna Allman (1-5) limited Iowa State to three combined hits during the second and third innings and kept the Cyclones scoreless until the fourth, when catcher Kaylee Bosworth led off with a single. Two batters later, Kirsten Caudle reached on a fielder's choice before Allman intentionally walked Williams to load the bases. Allman then hit pinch hitter Talyn Lewis to double Iowa State's lead before first baseman Sally Woolpert scored Caudle with a sacrifice fly later in the inning to run the Cyclone advantage to 3-0.
Held to one hit through the opening three innings by Cyclones starting righthander Emma Hylen (5-3), Cal Poly cut into Iowa State's lead during the bottom half of the fourth as senior right fielder Crimson Kaiser brought home Ramos with a fielder's choice.
Iowa State, however, grabbed the run back in the top half of the fifth as Bosworth tripled home center fielder Taylor Nearad.
Trailing 4-1, the Mustangs halved Iowa State's lead in the bottom half of the fifth as Ramos singled home senior left fielder Sydney James. The Mustangs, however, stranded runners at the corner bases to end the threat.
Cal Poly collected just one hit during the final two innings to close the matchup.
During Friday's second matchup versus Utah State (8-9), Cal Poly starting righthander Steffi Best (1-10) stranded the Utah State bases loaded in the top of the first, but the Aggies found the game's opening run in the third after third baseman Erin Kuba scored shortstop Lexi Orozco with a sacrifice fly.
Offensively, Cal Poly was kept hitless until Ramos produced her first career triple with two down in the bottom half of the third.
Utah State then added three runs in the fourth after the Mustangs committed a pair of errors.
Facing the 4-0 deficit, Cal Poly was limited to (one) hit the remainder of the evening by Utah State starting righthander Kapri Toone (1-3).
