SEATTLE – Junior designated player Shelby Jeffries hit her first home run of the season Wednesday afternoon at No. 7 Washington, but two-run efforts from the hosts in each of the first three innings helped the Huskies to a 7-1 victory.
Washington totaled the eventual winning runs during the bottom of the first inning as catcher Morganne Flores followed a full-count, leadoff walked by shortstop Sis Bates with a homer.
The Mustangs, however, responded at the first opportunity through the Jeffries home run.
Washington though pushed the lead to 4-1 in the bottom half of the second. Right fielder Madison Huskey opened another two-run inning with a leadoff homer before Bates singled home third baseman Nawai Kaupe with one out.
The Huskies then ran the lead to 6-1 in the third as Cal Poly freshman lefthanded reliever Krystyna Allman hit center fielder Amirah Milloy with the bases loaded and one down before Bates scored first baseman Kaija Gibson with a sacrifice fly.
Washington tacked on the final run in the bottom of the sixth.
Offensively, Cal Poly was held to the solitary Jeffries hit until junior first baseman Hailey Martin singled in the seventh.
Cal Poly (6-24) opens its 23rd Big West Conference season with a March 30-31 three-game set at UC Riverside. The series gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 30.
