DAVIS – Cal Poly softball head coach Jenny Condon became just the seventh coach in Big West history to manage at least 300 conference games, but UC Davis starting righthander Brooke Yanez held the Mustangs hitless at La Rue Field on Sunday afternoon as the Aggies prevailed, 5-0.
Held to one hit by Cal Poly starting righthander Steffi Best on Saturday, UC Davis required all of three batters to take Sunday's only lead as right fielder Marisa Given followed a leadoff base hit from left fielder Alyse Rojas with a one-out, run-scoring double.
Given returned an inning later to run the UC Davis lead to 3-0, lining a two-out double to left center field to bring home Rojas and second baseman Alex Sotomayor.
Offensively, Cal Poly (8-31, 2-7) was held without a baserunner until sophomore left fielder Jackie Napoli drew a walk to lead off the third. Cal Poly stranded Napoli to close the top of the third and, in the fifth, the Mustangs received another leadoff walk from junior first baseman Hailey Martin (above). Martin, however, was doubled up after Napoli lined into a double play to end Cal Poly's half of the fifth.
UC Davis (31-8, 6-3) added its fourth run in the fifth with Given the recipient of a run-scoring groundout by Aggie first baseman Maddie Rojas. The Aggies finalized the scoring in the sixth as Alyse Rojas singled up the middle to plate pinch hitter Autumn Miller.
Cal Poly continues action with an ESPN3-broadcasted April 19-20 series at CSUN. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 19.
