SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman left fielder Lily Amos (above) swatted her second career home run to finish 4-for-4 Sunday afternoon, but Long Beach State scored all of its runs with two outs as the Cal Poly softball program closed a three-game series against the 49ers with a 5-1 loss at Bob Janssen Field.
Long Beach State (21-23, 8-7) struck Sunday's opening blow in the top of the first inning as first baseman Taylor Rowland singled home left fielder Jamie Wren with two outs. An inning later and with the Long Beach State bases loaded, Wren lined a pitch to left field that was mishandled by Amos. The miscue emptied the bases to provide Long Beach State a 4-0 advantage.
Long Beach State tacked on its final run in the top of the fourth with Wren driving home shortstop Nichole Fry.
Cal Poly (10-35, 4-11), meanwhile, stranded two baserunners in each of the first two innings before leaving one on to complete both the third and fourth innings.
Having produced five hits through the initial four innings, Cal Poly got onto the scoreboard with two outs in the fifth as Amos lined her second homer over the left center field wall.
The Mustangs, however, were limited to just three hits the remainder of the day by Long Beach State starting righthander Kellie White (9-10).
Cal Poly closes its regular season road schedule when visiting Cal State Fullerton for a three-game, May 4-5 series. The series gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, May 4.
