Cal Poly Completes First Day of Arena Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif.- The Cal Poly swim team competed in the Arena Invitational in Long Beach. UC San Diego is hosting the invitational at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. 

Nine men's teams will compete in the event, including Air Force, Arizona State, BYU, Cal State Bakersfield, Hawaii, Stanford, UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego. Air Force will not be competing in the women's races; however, the other eight teams, along with BYU, California, LMU, Pepperdine, San Jose State and UCLA will be racing against the Cal Poly women's team.

Cal Poly men finished the first day of competition in fifth place, behind first place Stanford, second place UC San Diego and third place BYU.  The Cal Poly women finished the day in 11th place behind first place Cal, second place UC San Diego State and third place Arizona State.

In the men's 500 yard freestyle, Sonny Fierro had a great finish advancing to the finals and coming in seventh place at 4:29.23.  Ian Sinclair advanced to the consolation round finishing 14th at 4:31.26.  Aaron McKinnon advanced to the consolation final in the 50 yard freestyle coming in 11th (20.62).  The 200 yard individual medley had Mickey Mackle in the consolation final finishing 13th at 1:50.61.  The men come in ninth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:24.43) and eighth in the 400 medley relay (3:23.28).

In the women's 200 yard individual relay, Rachel O'Brien advanced to the consolation final and finished 13th (2:04.08).  In the women's 400 medley relay, Cal Poly finished ninth (3:48.19) and in the 200 freestyle relay, the Mustangs finished 12th (1:35.50).

The Arena Invitational continues tomorrow, wrapping up on Saturday.
