Fierro, McIntyre Win Two Events Each for Mustangs in Dual Meet at UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Cal Poly's Sonny Fierro and Sami McIntyre each won two events during the Blue-Green Rivalry dual meet against UC Santa Barbara at Campus Pool on Saturday afternoon. The hosting Gauchos won 183-110 on the women's side and 203-85 on the men's.

Fierro, who came into the week ranked No. 4 in the Pac-12 Conference in the men's 1,000-yard freestyle, continued his strong season of late, starting the day by finishing first in that event, with a time of 9 minutes, 26.37 seconds. Afterward, in the 500 free, the sophomore again edged UCSB's Andrew Barmann — this time by a thrilling five-hundredths of a second — to touch the wall first, at 4:35.18.

Leading the Mustangs women's squad, McIntyre swept both of her dives for the second meet in a row. (McIntyre was named the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday.) The senior, ranked fourth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, scored a 236.55 in Saturday's 1-meter competition before compiling a score of 242.25 on the 3-meter board (which was just ahead of the 237.45 by Hannah Tomp of the Gauchos).

Junior Grace Greenwood was close behind McIntyre in the 1-meter event, placing second at 229.80.

Another leader for the women's team, senior Rachel Cleak, won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.04. (She came into the week ranked third in the MPSF in that event.) Later Saturday, Cleak (pictured at right) came in second in the 100 fly, in 57.64 seconds.

Also for Cal Poly, sophomore Nicole Antoniuk claimed the women's 500 freestyle victory (in 5:07.78) before finishing as the runner-up in the 1,000 free (10:34.50).

Sophomore Mickey Mackle tallied a combined 11 points in the men's team totals thanks to a versatile day. He started by finishing second in the 200 fly (at 1:52.52), followed with a third-place time in the 200 backstroke (1:54.48) and then another second-place swim in the 200 individual medley (1:52.49).

Two Cal Poly freshmen added impressive second-place showings, as well, as Jack Jenner clocked a 1:42.68 in his 200 free before Karoline Eckhart swam to a 5:10.20 in her 500 free.

Other Mustangs chalking up second-place points included sophomore Allison de Peralta in the 100 back (at 58.55 seconds), sophomore Gabby Lindblad in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.89) and junior Paolo Stanchi in both the 100 back (52.71) and 200 breast (2:06.93).

Cal Poly will now prepare for upcoming conference championship meets at different sites. The women's MPSF finals will be held from Feb. 19-22 at East Los Angeles City College in Monterey Park, before the men's Pac-12 finals will be from March 5-8 at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
