Fierro Opens NCAA Championships in 500 Freestyle Prelims

AUSTIN, Texas — In the first of his three scheduled events at the NCAA Men's Swimming Championships this week, Cal Poly sophomore Sonny Fierro raced in the 500-yard freestyle prelims at Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center on Thursday afternoon.

Fierro was 44th with a time of 4 minutes, 23.14 seconds.

He was 3.64 seconds back of his season-best time of 4:19.50, which came three weeks ago at the Pac-12 Conference Championships and broke his own school record.

Fierro is also entered in the 200 free, for 9 a.m. Friday, and the 1,650 free (his premier race), at 2:45 p.m. Saturday.

A video stream of Friday's prelims will be provided by Texas HERE.

ESPNU will televise a 90-minute recap of the national championships at 5 p.m. April 9.
