Cal Poly Men Third, Women Eighth After First Day of A3 Performance Invite

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — A second-place finish by Mickey Mackle and thirds by Austin Cunniff and Caleb Davies highlighted Cal Poly's performances in the A3 Performance Invitational swim meet hosted by UC San Diego at East Los Angeles City College on Thursday.

Mackle (pictured at right) placed second in the men's 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1 minute, 49.40 seconds, just .24 of a second behind winner Dylan Kubick of UC Santa Barbara.

Cuniff finished third in the 500 freestyle, clocked in 4:28.28, while Davies touched the wall third in the 50 freestyle, timed in 20.57 seconds.

The Cal Poly men's team also placed third in the 400 medley relay as Zach Cootes, Jimmy Deiparine, Justin Dedianous and Davies combined for a time of 3:19.94, while the 200 freestyle relay foursome of John Hornacek, Jack Jenner, Blake Faris and Davies placed fifth in 1:22.92.

Dustin Bolt was fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:29.76) while Brandon Nguyen finished seventh in the 200 individual medley (1:53.68).

The Mustang men are third among eight schools competing in the three-day meet. UC Santa Barbara leads with 498 points, followed by UC San Diego at 356.5 and Cal Poly at 298.5.

In the women's team standings, San Diego State leads with 370 points, 109 points ahead of UC Santa Barbara. Cal Poly is eighth with 131 points.

The Mustang women were led by Bonnie Diamond's fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:56.23). She also anchored the ninth-place 400 medley relay team (3:50.33) while the 200 freestyle relay squad finished 12th in 1:36.47.

Friday's events include the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and a pair of relay events.
