Cal Poly Swept by UC Santa Barbara in Blue-Green Rivalry

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Despite a quartet of Top-5 program records and winning eight of the 14 individual events on Saturday morning, the Cal Poly women's swimming and diving team was defeated by UC Santa Barbara, 163-117 at Campus Pool. The Cal Poly men's side was unable to keep the Gauchos from sweeping the Blue-Green Rivalry, falling 164-97.

Mustang freshman Meghan Merlihan (pictured) established a new career-best by winning the 1,000-yard freestyle with a mark of 10:20.61, which is good for No. 3 on the program's all-time list. Merlihan's race time is also No. 4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation this season (beating her collegiate career-best of 10:21.61 set on Oct. 31).

Cal Poly sophomore Sage Speak also re-wrote the Cal Poly record book this afternoon by winning the 200-yard breaststroke after her time of 2:16.96, which is now good for No. 3 on the program's all-time list. Her mark is also good for No. 6 among all MPSF swimmers in the category this season.

Cal Poly sophomore diver Lauren Pierce won both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards this afternoon, securing a mark of 247.95 on the 1-meter (good for No. 3 in program history) and 255.45 on the 3-meter (also good for No. 5 in Cal Poly history in the event).

On the men's side, Cal Poly sophomore Pearu Pold captured a pair of event victories, including the 500-yard freestyle (with a mark of 4:31.68) and 1,000 free (9:25.20), which secured 18 points towards the Mustangs aggregate total. Pold's 1,000 free time is good for No. 3 in the MPSF this season (besting his season-best mark of 9:32.77 in the event on Oct. 31). His 500 free mark currently ranks him No. 13 in the MPSF in the event overall this season.

Cal Poly sophomore Zach Cootes won the 200-yard butterfly with a race time of 1:51.21 and sophomore Nolan Newland captured the 500 free in 4:33.15, adding a collected 18 more points to the Mustang team total.

UC Santa Barbara won all four of the team relays, including the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:04.11) and 200-yard medley relay (1:32.15) on the men's side and the 400 free relay (3:26.58) and 200 medley relay (1:43.58) on the women's side.

Saturday marked the final dual meet of the season for Cal Poly, which now shifts its focus to the MPSF Championships which take place from Wednesday, Feb. 17 through Saturday, Feb. 20. The MPSF Championships will be held at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park and at the Spieker Aquatics Center at UCLA.
