MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — The Cal Poly swimming program began the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Wednesday by breaking two school records in the men's 200-yard medley relay and the men's 800-yard free relay.
The team of juniors Dominic Dalpiaz and Zack Allen as well as sophomores Brian Whittington and Paul Rogers broke the mark with a time of 1:28.21. The previous record was 1:28.59 and set back in 2015. The Mustangs finished fourth overall in the event.
UCSB won the event with a time of 1:26.04.
In the men's 800-free relay, the Mustangs broke a school record as they finished third in the event. The team of Dalpiaz, Allen, Rogers and senior Nolan Newland finished with a time of 6:27.54, almost a full three seconds faster than the previous record set in 2016.
In the opening event of the evening, the Cal Poly women finished seventh in the 200-medley relay with UCSB capturing first place. The Mustang quartet of sophomores Kiki Basil and Amelia Feick, freshman Sascha Keir and junior Emily Imfeld finished with a time of 1:44.71.
In the women's 800-free relay, freshmen Emilia Piccininni and Stephanie Backlund, junior Meghan Merlihan and senior Bonnie Diamond finished seventh as they swam a time of 7:28.83. Hawai'i won the event with a meet and pool record time of 7:07.30.
Cal Poly continues the MPSF Championships Thursday with eight finals events scheduled, including the men's and women's 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free. The preliminary round begins at 10 a.m. and the finals begin at 6.
