Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Wins at SDSU Double Dual Meet

SAN DIEGO — The Cal Poly men's and women's swimming and diving teams picked up a win apiece in a double-dual meet against San Diego State and Air Force Wednesday on the campus of SDSU.

The men's team, competing only against Air Force, defeated the Falcons 226-68. The women's team took down Air Force 230-64 and fell to the Aztecs in a close contest 152-140.

The Mustangs won a total of 19 of the 32 combined men's and women's events. Five men's swimmers won multiple events and a total of eight men's swimmers and divers won events. On the women's side, four different Cal Poly swimmers won events.

Sophomore Alex Nikolaev won the Mustangs' first individual event of the day in the 1000-yard free with a time of 9:49.89. He later also won the 500 free with a time of 4:41.17. Senior Dominic Dalpiaz won both the 200 free with a time of 1:40.82 and the 100 free with a time of 45.73. Sophomore Mihail Amiorkov also won two events, winning both the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.34 and the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.95. Senior Zack Allen won both the 50 free with a time of 20.92 and the 100 fly with a time of 49.40. Fellow senior Brian Whittington was the fifth Mustang to win two events, winning both the 100 breast with a time of 57.44 and the 200 breast with a time of 2:05.59. Freshman Gennady Sytnik won the 200 back with a time of 1:55.29

Two different men's divers won also won events. Sophomore Noah McKinley won the 1-meter dive with a school-record score of 310.13, also good for a Zone E Qualifying score and freshman Jackson Cudmore won the 3-meter dive with a score of 365.55, also good for the school record.

On the women's side, sophomore Sascha Keir won the 100 back with a time of 59.04, senior Emily Imfeld won the 100 free with a time of 52.76, junior Amelia Feick won the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.28 and senior Meghan Merlihan won the 500 free with a time of 5:02.12 and finished second in the 1000 free with a season-best time of 10:30.85.

Cal Poly also won three team relay events on the day. The men's squad of Sytnik, Allen, Whittington and Dalpiaz won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.74. The men's team comprised of Allen, Dalpiaz, junior Nic Clark and junior Paul Rogers won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:01.79, about 10 seconds ahead of second place. The women's squad of junior Emily Peters, Imfeld, sophomore Alyssa Kjelsberg and sophomore Emelia Piccininni won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:30.85, almost six seconds ahead of second place.

Both the Mustangs men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be back in action Jan. 12 when they host UC San Diego from Anderson Aquatics Center at 11 a.m.
