Merlihan, McKinley Named MPSF Athletes of the Week

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After collecting individual wins during Cal Poly swimming & diving's win over Air Force last week in a double dual meet that also included San Diego State, sophomore diver Noah McKinley has been named this week's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Male Athlete of the Week and senior swimmer Meghan Merlihan has been named the MPSF Female Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference Wednesday.

Merlihan won the 500 free with a time of 5:02.12 and finished second in the 1000 free with a  season-best 10:30.85 in the Mustangs' double-dual meet against Air Force and San Diego State 
on December 19. This is the first career MPSF weekly award for Merlihan.

McKinley won the one-meter dive in the Mustangs' meet against Air Force. He recorded a school-record 310.13, which was also good for an NCAA Zone Qualifying score. He also scored a Zone-Qualifying 327.15 on the three-meter, which placed him second in the event. This is the first career MPSF weekly award for McKinley.

This is the second and third MPSF Athletes of the Week awards for the Mustangs this season.

The Cal Poly men and women both beat Air Force. The men won by a score of 226-68 and the women won 230-64. The women fell to San Diego State in a close contest 152-140. In that double-dual meet, the Mustangs won 19 of the 32 events.

Both swimming and diving teams next compete January 12 when they host UC San Diego from Anderson Aquatics Center at 11 a.m.
