Mustangs Travel to Bay Area, Orange County for Trio of Track Meets

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After collecting six victories at the home-opening Cal Poly ShareSLO Invitational last weekend, the Mustang track & field program will head back out on the road this week, visiting a trio of meets around the state.

A group of 27 Mustangs will compete at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival (this season held at Chabot College in Hayward) on Friday, followed by three teammates entered at the Stanford Invitational between Friday and Saturday, before 45 student-athletes compete at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Challenge (vs. CSF, CSU Bakersfield, Cornell and UC Davis) on March 31.

Following the 36th annual home invite, hosted at the newly renovated Steve Miller and John Capriotti Athletics Complex, 19 Mustangs currently rank among the Top 5 on Big West Conference leaderboards for 20 events.

A trio representing Cal Poly rank No. 1 throughout the conference entering this weekend: juniors Connor Crowe (with a time of 1:52.60 for the 800 meters) and Sean McDermott (9:04.67 in the 3,000m steeplechase), and two-time 2018 Big West Athlete of the Week Brooke Tjerrild (a freshman via 13 feet, 7.25 inches for the pole vault).

Six Mustangs are just one spot back of top rankings conference-wide: freshman Bikram Thiara (at 53.36 seconds for the 400m hurdles), sophomore Abi Iriafen (via 39' 10" in the triple jump), along with seniors Brad Beekman (16' 5.5" pole vault), Daijah Joe-Smith (11.72 in the 100-meter dash), Peter Cotsirilos (3:48.80 for the 1,500m) and Maddie McDonald (at 10:43.60 in the steeplechase).

Additionally, sophomore Julie Zweng and senior Danielle Taylor are tied for No. 3 in the conference, each with high-jump clearances of 5' 5.75", while senior Logan Marshall is also third in the steeple (9:13.42).

Meanwhile, freshman Michelle Chandler (upon 2:14.72 in the 800m), sophomores Caice Lanovaz (19' 1.5" for the long jump) and Bryanna Fuller (10:52.00 steeplechase), and junior Mikey Giguere (3:50.80 for the 1,500m) each are holding down No. 4 Big West rankings so far, while freshmen 800m specialists Thomas Schauerman (1:53.89) & Mikaela Romanini (2:15.04), as well as McDonald (4:34.98) plus fellow 1,500m senior Alex Merder (3:51.00) are all fifth on the leaderboard.
