Cal Poly Track & Field Visits UCLA for Johnson/Joyner-Kersee Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly Track & Field will visit UCLA this weekend, set to compete at the 16th annual Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational on Saturday. Texas A&M, San Francisco and Sacramento State will also join the Bruins' meet in the Division I scoring section, in addition to Mt. San Antonio College, Glendale College and Riverside City College.

Action in Drake Stadium goes from 8:30 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. April 14:

2018 Cal Poly Season-Bests: Men  /  Women

A combined 26 Mustangs rank among the top five across the Big West Conference.

Five Mustangs are ranked No. 1: senior Swarnjit Boyal (at 29:05.54 in the 10,000 meters), juniors Sean McDermott (9:04.67 for the 3,000m steeplechase) and Mikey Giguere (14:24.96 in the 5,000m), sophomore Caice Lanovaz (via 5,011 points in the heptathlon) and freshman Brooke Tjerrild (with a pole vault of 13' 7.25").

Only one spot back of top rankings conference-wide are seniors Peter Cotsirilos (3:48.80 - 1,500m) and Brad Beekman (16' 5.5" - pole vault), juniors Keana Viss (4,534 points - heptathlon) and Miranda Daschian (17:01.41 - 5,000m), sophomore Abi Iriafen (39' 10" - triple jump) and freshman Bikram Thiara (53.36 - 400m hurdles).

Senior Maddie McDonald (3,000m steeplechase - 10:41.33) & junior Allison Scranton (discus - 160' 7") rank third, while 10 teammates hold No. 4 rankings: seniors Daijah Joe-Smith (11.72 - 100-meter dash) and Logan Marshall (9:13.42 - steeplechase), juniors Megan Mooney (139' 2" - javelin), Connor Crowe (1:52.60 - 800m), Giguere (3:50.80 - 1,500m), Dane Clemensen (181' 10" - javelin) & Delaney Fitzsimmons (10:47.49 - steeple), along with sophomores Julie Zweng (5' 7" - high jump), Molly Ross (14.03 - 100m hurdles) & Evan Jameson (14:42.42 - 5,000m).

Ranked fifth are junior Alex Merder (3:51.00 - 1,500m) and freshmen Jake Ritter (14:43.66 - 5,000m) and Michelle Chandler (2:12.72 - 800m).

After returning from UCLA, the Mustangs will again travel to Southern California in the week to follow, heading to the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, Beach Invitational at LBSU and Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific from April 19-21.
