SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly senior Alex Merder was selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Track & Field/Cross Country Team announced Thursday.

Merder, who recently graduated with a Biological Sciences degree (concentrating in Cellular and Molecular Biology), is one of 15 student-athletes across the country chosen to the Second Team.

The 2019 Big West 1,500-meter champion from Carlsbad, Merder made a combined six career Conference All-Academic Teams between either track or cross country.

Merder — who in the fall contributed to his third-straight team XC conference championship — went on to run a career-best 1,500m of 3:49.73 (a win vs. UCSB) this spring on the way to his individual title. He also posted a win at the Cal Poly Invitational on March 23, via 3:51.08.

After completing a rare three-peat at the Big West Championship, the Mustang men's cross country team finished the 2018 season ranked No. 39 in the NCAA D-I CCRI.

Previously on May 28, Merder was one of 12 student-athletes chosen to the Men's First Team for District 8, which incorporates all of Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

Abibat Rahman-Davies and Miranda Daschian were also each nominated by Cal Poly for the Women's Team.

Among the 90 student-athletes selected to the Academic All-America Teams by COSIDA, 20 men and 33 women carry a 4.0 grade-point average or higher, including all 15 women on the first team. The 15 members of the men's team carry an average GPA of 3.98, while the women's team carries a 4.04 GPA.
