DAVIS, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's basketball team, without the services of starter Kristina Santiago, fell on the road to UC Davis, 65-61. The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Mustangs. With the loss, Cal Poly falls to 15-13 overall and 11-4 in Big West play while UC Davis improves to 17-12 and 9-6.
Burns scored her points hitting four of eight from the beyond the arc with Elegado hitting four of 13 from the floor.
Samantha Meggison led the Aggies with 15 points when she hit four of 14 from the floor and seven of eight from the line.
Cal Poly shot 39 percent from the floor was eight of 20 from long range. The team corralled 36 rebounds while committing 16 turnovers.
UC Davis shot 41 percent from the floor and made six of 16 from long range. UCD grabbed 34 rebounds and committed just 11 turnovers.
In the first half the Mustangs built a nine point lead (14-5) just over five minutes into the game (14:48) when Burns hit three-pointer off an assist from Jonae Ervin.
Cal Poly maintained its nine point lead, 21-12, on an Ervin lay up with 11:52 left in the half.
UC Davis cut the lead to four, 22-18, with 8:30 on the clock when Kasey Reicks converted a layup and tied the game (22-22) at 6:54 on a pair of free throws by Meggison.
Cal Poly led, 33-30, with 1:23 left in the half, but surrendered six-straight points and UCD went into the break leading 36-33.
The second half opened with the Mustangs scoring the first five points and taking a 38-36 lead capped by a Burns three-pointer at 18:20 and held a 41-36 lead at 16:24 on a pair of free throws by Griffin.
After holding a 44-39 lead the Mustangs surrendered 12-0 run and the lead to UC Davis with the Aggies holding a 51-44 lead with 9:44 left in the game.
Brittany Woodard broke the 14-0 run (53-46) with a pair of free throws with 8:44 on the clock.
The Mustangs battled back and took a 56-55 lead on a three by Martin with 3:52 on the clock, but UCD came right back with a three of its own to hold a 58-56 lead at the under four minute time out (3:16).
Cal Poly trailed 63-59 with 33 seconds left on the clock when Burns made a layup to pull the team within two with 17 seconds left, but the Mustangs would get no closer with the final score, 65-61.
