Cal Poly Tops Blue-Green Rival UCSB on Senior Day, 66-60

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's basketball team picked up its third win in four games Saturday afternoon, defeating UC Santa Barbara 66-60 for a Blue-Green Rivalry and Senior Day victory in front of 1,418 fans at Mott Athletics Center.

The Mustangs led 18-15 after the first quarter. A jumper by Jasmine Ware brought the Gauchos to within 26-22 almost five minutes into the second, but one of Cal Poly's five seniors, point guard Lisa Marie Sanchez, answered with a jump shot, followed by a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Dynn Leaupepe to make it 31-22 with a minute remaining to halftime.

Then with 29 seconds left in the half, Leaupepe knocked down another 3. On the last play of the half, Dynn secured a rebound and found her twin sister, Lynn, who sank a buzzer-beating 3 to cap a 19-9 quarter and push the lead to 37-24 at the break.

Dynn Leaupepe scored 14 of her 20 points in the first half, during which the Mustangs held UCSB (11-18, 8-7 Big West Conference) to 8-for-22 shooting.

Cal Poly (14-14, 7-8) took its largest lead, 40-26, on a free throw by senior guard Beth Balbierz, and also led 48-34 on another jumper from Dynn Leaupepe 4:03 before the fourth.

After beginning the final quarter down 51-40, the Gauchos rallied to cut the deficit to just 57-55 with 58 seconds remaining. But Balbierz came up big with a 3 to re-establish a five-point gap with 36 seconds left.

The Mustangs then made all six of their free throws (via Sanchez, Leaupepe and junior forward Amanda Lovely) in the last 20 seconds to hold on for the program's 10th win in the past 11 meetings between the two.

Cal Poly, which came in as the No. 2 free-throw shooting team in the conference, went 13-of-15 from the foul line.

Balbierz finished with 14 points, while Lynn Leaupepe added 13. Sanchez distributed a team-high four assists, and fellow senior guard Heather Madrigal also played her last career game at home.

Cal Poly will conclude the regular season at Hawai'i (17-9, 10-3) at 9 p.m. PST Saturday, before heading to UC Irvine for the conference tournament, either on March 8 or 9.
