Cal Poly Rallies for 75-64 Road Win Over Long Beach State on ESPN3

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Cal Poly senior Dynn Leaupepe scored 23 points and gathered a career-high 13 rebounds Thursday night at Long Beach State, while her twin sister Lynn Leaupepe added 16 points as the Mustang women's basketball team rallied for a 75-64 Big West Conference win inside Walter Pyramid.

The 49ers sprinted to a 9-2 lead 2:39 from tip-off on ESPN3, but the Mustangs would close the deficit to 17-14 by the end of the initial quarter.

Long Beach State regrouped midway through the second, taking its largest lead of the evening, 30-17, on a layup from senior guard Jessica Gertz 2:05 before intermission.

After narrowing the gap to 32-26 at halftime, Cal Poly (10-8, 4-2) kept its momentum going into the third period, moving in front 36-35 thanks to a jumper by Dynn 3:32 into the quarter.

LBSU (2-18, 0-6) seized back the lead again, though, bringing a 52-47 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Trailing 60-54, the decisive swing began with 7:47 remaining, when senior forward Mary Kate Evans sank a 3-pointer, igniting a 10-0 run.

Dynn Leaupepe converted back-to-back layups with 7:17 and 6:54 to play, before fellow senior Gabby Grupalo buried a 3 at the 6:14 mark to polish off the pivotal stretch and provide a 64-60 lead.

The Mustangs rolled from there, finishing outscoring the 49ers 28-12 in the fourth.

Grupalo and junior center Devin Stanback scored eight points apiece for the Mustangs, while freshman guard Shanaijah Davison paced LBSU with 18 points.

Lynn Leaupepe also secured five rebounds, upping her career total to 573 — tied for No. 9 in school history.

Cal Poly will continue its road weekend visiting Cal State Fullerton at 6 p.m. Saturday. Also Jan. 27, Cal Poly Varsity Club, along with the Orange County Cal Poly Alumni Association, will host a pregame mixer at Oggi's Pizza (2595 E. Chapman Ave.) from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
