ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. -- Santa Clara won the Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Invitational women's golf tournament on Tuesday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course while Cal State Northridge overtook Cal Poly in a close battle for second place.
The Broncos won the 12-team tournament with a 44-over-par 628 total following a final-round four-person 309 total, the best of any team in the two-day, 36-hole event.
Cal State Northridge, which trailed Cal Poly by three strokes entering Tuesday's final round, carded a 310 for a 636 total while the host Mustangs checked in with a 315 for a 638 total, tied for third place with Grand Canyon.
Individual honors went to Balbina Guajardo of Santa Clara with a final-round par 73 on the 6,088-yard course for a four-over-par 150 total. Amelia Ek of UC Riverside and Stephanie Kim of Northern Arizona shared second place with 151 totals. Ek also shot a final-round 73 while Kim, the first-round leader, finished with a 77.
Guajardo, who posted two birdies and a pair of bogeys in her final-round par-73, won despite incurring a two-stroke penalty Monday for teeing off on the 14th hole when she had just finished the front nine.
Cal Poly's top finisher was sophomore Asia Adell, who followed Monday's 77 with a 76 Tuesday for a seven-over-par 153 total and a fifth-place tie with Monica Jung of Southern Utah and Margo Dionisio of Cal State Northridge. Adell carded birdies on the ninth and 18th holes.
Morgan Thomas (pictured above) carded a final-round 76 for a 158 total and 11th place while Caitlin Farley finished 19 with a 162 total after an 83 Tuesday.
Other Mustang scorers were Kirsten Locke with an 80 for a 165 total and 28th place and Alex Phillips with an 84 for a 169 total and 48th place.
Three other Mustangs competed as individuals, led by Laura Howard, who placed eighth with a 79 and 156 total. Sorelle Sedej finished 17th with a 161 total while Giovanna Ascolani was 40th with a 167 total.
Howard and Adell finished second in par-3 scoring at one over par wjile Adell shared first place with two other golfers in par-5 scoring at minus-1. Adell and Thomas shared third place with their 24 pars. Individual winner Guajardo had the most pars with 27 and led the field in par-5 scoring at minus-1.
Cal Poly completed its fall schedule with its own tournament and will return to action Feb. 19-21 in the Folino Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton at the Industry Hills Golf Course in City of Industry, Calif.
