Hirsch Leads Cal Poly to Firestone Grill Invitational Championship


ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. -- A 73 by Madison Hirsch helped the Cal Poly women's golf team win the Firestone Grill Invitational on Tuesday at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course.

Hirsch (pictured at right) finished with a 148 total, tied for fourth place, and Cal Poly won with a four-person 608 total on the 5,996-yard, par-73 course. Seattle finished second at 616 while UC Riverside claimed third place with a 624 total. There were 11 teams in the two-day tournament.

Individual winner was Annie Freman of Santa Clara with rounds of 73 and 69 for a 142 total, four strokes ahead of runners-up Jamie Corr, playing on Cal Poly's "B" team, and Juhee Lee of Seattle. Hirsch shared fourth place with Monica Jung of Southern Utah and Haley Dunn of Dixie State.

Freman's round of 69 on a windy Tuesday included eight birdies, a pair of bogeys and a double-bogey. She led the field of 68 golfers with a minus-three total on the par-3 holes as well as with a minus-four total on the par-5 holes.

Mustang Alex Phillips, one of three golfers who shared the first-round lead with 73s, finished with a 78 for a 151 total and eighth place while Taylor Yoshitake followed her 81 on Monday with a 73 Tuesday for a 154 total and 13th place.

Other scoring Mustangs were Asia Adell with a final-round 75 for a 156 total and 15th place, and Morgan Thomas with a 77 for a 160 total and 29th place.

Corr led the Mustangs' "B" team to a sixth-place tie with Weber State.

Others on the "B" team were Montana Kosty with a 78 for a 158 total and 21st place, Giovanna Ascolani with a 79 for a 163 total and 38th place, Lexie Price with an 85 for a 166 total and 48th place, and Laura Howard with an 85 as well for a 169 total and 51st place.

Competing as an individual, Mustang freshman Carolane Gariepy finished in 51st place with rounds of 84 and 85.

Freman posted 12 birdies over 36 holes to pace the field. Phillips was second with eight birdies. Corr and UC Riverside's Brittani Ferraro each carded an eagle during the first round Monday.

Cal Poly has concluded its fall schedule and returns to action Feb. 10-11 at the Cal State Northridge Matador Invitational, to be held at the Wood Ranch Golf Course in Simi Valley.
