Cal Poly Opens Women's Golf Season at 2016 Hobble Creek Classic

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly opens its second women's golf season under head coach Sofie Aagaard on Monday and Tuesday at the 2016 Hobble Creek Classic hosted by Utah Valley University.

The Mustangs are among 14 teams competing in the two-day, 54-hole tournament on the 6,032-yard, par-71 Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville, Utah.

Last year, Cal Poly finished third in the event and Desiree Gillaspy placed in a tie for fifth place with a four-over-par total. Hawaii was the team champion and was paced by the top two finishers, Eimi Koga (minus-1) and Raquel Ek (plus-1).

A shotgun start is scheduled for 7:15 a.m. PDT both days, with two rounds to be played Monday and the final round on Tuesday. Live stats will be available on the women's golf schedule page at GoPoly.com.

In addition to Cal Poly and Utah Valley, other teams in the field include CSUN, Eastern Washington, Grand Canyon, Idaho State, UMKC, Montana State, North Dakota, Northern Arizona, Sam Houston State, Southern Utah, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Weber State.

Cal Poly's leading scorer a year ago, Madison Hirsch, has graduated, but the next five golfers on the Mustang roster of a year ago in terms of scoring average return, led by junior Jamie Harada (pictured above) with a 76.7 average over 23 rounds.

Gillaspy, also a junior, averaged 77.4 strokes per round while Jamie Binns, yet another junior, compiled a 77.5 scoring average. Junior Sophie Bergland checked in with a 77.6 average.

The roster also includes junior Meridith Hirsch, seniors Sadle Strain and Lucy Robson, sophomore Mallory Muehlbauer (a transfer from BYU) and freshmen Tiffany Cha and Elizabeth Walinder.

In her first season as head coach of the Mustangs, Aagaard guided the squad to a second-place finish in the Big West Conference Championship, four shots behind UC Riverside. Aagaard was named Big West Coach of the Year by her peers and Madison Hirsch earned second-team All-Big West honors.

Cal Poly will host the Cal Poly Invitational on Oct. 22-23 at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
