Cal Poly Inches Up to 10th-Place Finish in The Gold Rush

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Sophie Bergland carded a 72 while Desiree Gillaspy and Mallory Muehlbauer recorded 73s as the Cal Poly women's golf team climbed one position and finished 10th in The Gold Rush hosted by Long Beach State on Tuesday.

At the El Dorado Golf Club, Bergland (pictured at right) finished with a nine-over-par 225 total and into a tie for 15th place, moving up 21 spots with her par round.

Gillaspy also finished in a tie for 15th place as she improved her position 13 spots while Muehlbauer did exactly the same with her 73.

One other Mustang golfer joined the crowd in the tie for 15th place as Caroline Cantlay, competing as an individual, posted a 77. Cantlay was tied for the lead after the first round with a 71.

After carding a four-person 310 Monday morning and 312 Monday afternoon, Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs rebounded with a 294 total Tuesday, the second-best round of the day among the 14 teams, for a 916 aggregate.

Georgia led the way with a 19-over-par 883 total, five shots ahead of Brigham Young. Colorado State finished third, another four strokes back.

Sophie Hausmann of Idaho, tied for 21st place after the first round with a 75, rallied with a 69 and 68 to claim medalist honors with a four-under-par 212 total, three shots ahead of runner-up and second-round leader Ellen Secor (71-70-74–215) of Colorado State.

Paula Neira Garcia and Rinko Mitsunaga, both of Georgia, shared third place with 220 totals.

Cal Poly's other scoring golfers were Sienna Scibird with a final-round 76 for a 241 total and 68th place, and Meridith Hirsch with an 82 for a 256 aggregate and 80th place.

Muehlbauer was second in par-3 scoring at even par while Gillaspy finished sixth in par-4 scoring at four over par.

Cal Poly returns to action Feb. 26-27 at the Bruin-Wave Invitational, co-hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine but held at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
