ELK GROVE, Calif. — Cal Poly freshman Elizabeth Scholtes earned her second career top-10 finish Tuesday, placing in a tie for seventh place in The Gunrock Invitational hosted by UC Davis at the Del Paso Country Club.
Scholtes, who recorded a 76 and 71 in the opening two rounds, carded another 71 Tuesday for a two-over-par 218 total, sharing seventh place with Hannah Sun of UC Davis.
In jumping up seven spots on the leaderboard in the final round, Scholtes earned her sixth round of par or better this season and her 54-hole total is the second best of her young Mustang career.
Scholtes carded 10 birdies over 54 holes, third in the field of 67 golfers. She led the field in par-3 scoring at four under par.
Mustang teammate Caroline Cantlay (pictured above) also earned a top-20 finish, her sixth as a Mustang, with a six-over-par 222 total and a 17th-place tie with two other golfers. Cantlay posted rounds of 73, 75 and 74 on the 6,224-yard, par-72 course.
As a team, Cal Poly leapfrogged UC Riverside for seventh place in the field of 11 teams, carding a 54-hole 908 aggregate with a final-round 304. The Mustangs finished one stroke ahead of Northern Colorado and nine in front of UC Riverside.
Sacramento State was the only team to finish under par in the two-day tournament, carding a final-round 290 for a five-under-par 859 total and a 16-stroke victory over Cal. Coastal Carolina finished third, four more strokes behind the Hornets.
Mustang Vanessa wang placed 43rd with a final-round 78 for a 232 total while Sienna Scibird was 49th with a 236 total after carding an 81. Mallory Muehlbauer recorded an 84 for a 248 total and 63rd place.
Competing as individuals, Tiffany Cha placed 36th with a 76 for a 230 total while Maya Pugatch checked in with an 87 for a 251 total and 66th place.
After a month off, Cal Poly returns to action April 8-9 at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on the Southern Dunes Golf Course in Maricopa, Arizona.
