Wyoming Wins Nine of 10 Bouts for 32-3 Dual Meet Victory Over Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Wyoming, armed with five nationally ranked wrestlers, parlayed a fall, two major decisions and six decisions into a 32-3 victory over Cal Poly in a non-conference dual wrestling meet Friday night in Mott Athletics Center.

Cole Mendenhall notched the fall in the first period at 149 pounds while Branson Ashworth at 165 and Drew Templeman at 125 both won by majors for Wyoming (3-5), ranked No. 22 in the nation this week.

Cal Poly, which received its lone victory from Mitch Woods at 184 pounds, fell to 4-6.

Woods (pictured at right) and Wyoming's Lucas Lovvorn were locked in a scoreless dual through two periods before Woods earned an early third-period escape followed by a takedown and riding time for a 4-1 decision.

Now 9-5 on the year, Woods has won three straight matches and eight of his last 10.

Feature match of the night was between two nationally ranked wrestlers at 157 pounds. Wyoming's Archie Colgan, ranked No. 19, jumped to a 6-0 first-period lead and held on for a 6-4 decision over Cal Poly's No. 18 Colt Shorts.

Shorts bounced back with escapes in each of the first two periods, a penalty point in the third and riding time, but couldn't secure near-fall points in the final seconds that would have forced overtime.

In other close matches, Mustang 141-pounder Colton Schilling dropped a 5-2 decision and 285-pounder Spencer Empey fell 6-4 as he couldn't score a takedown in the final seconds that would have forced overtime.

Cal Poly concludes Alumni and Supporter Weekend on Sunday with a noon match against Air Force in the Performing Arts Center's Harman Hall. Seven seniors and a junior will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
