Cal Poly won dual over No. 27 Hoosiers by virtue of a 6-4 advantage in victories ... also edged Brandon Ngati of No. 22 West Virginia 2-0 to clinch 19-18 dual meet victory ... his six reversals in dual meets led the team ... earned team's Academic Excellence Award ... named to Pac-12 Conference All-Academic first team for the second straight year.
2015-16 -- Won eight of 20 matches as a sophomore with three falls and one major decision ... two of the falls came in Reno Tournament of Champions while the last was in his last match of the season as he pinned Gabe Gonzalez of Boise State in 4 minutes, 10 seconds, for fifth place in Pac-12 Championship at 285 pounds ... posted 2-2 marks in both the Las Vegas Invitational and Reno Tournament of Champions ... named to Pac-12 Conference All-Academic first team.
2014-15 – Redshirt … did not wrestle in any open tournaments.
2013-14 – Compiled 13-12 record in first season as a Mustang … two wins were by fall against Destin Theus of Oklahoma City and Ivan DeLeon of Nebraska-Kearney … 4-3 in dual meets, including 8-3 upset over then-No. 18 Amarveer Dhesi of Oregon State … placed second in Roadrunner Open with 3-1 mark and was fourth in Pac-12 finals at 285 pounds.
High School -- Empey was a three-time Nevada state champion under head coach Dan Barrazza at Reed High School, posting a career 165-14 record and twice earning Nevada High School Wrestler of the Year honors ... also is a four-time Nevada All-State Academic Team member ... as a sophomore, posted a perfect 50-0 record en route to winning a state championship and earned the Northern Nevada 4A Region Upper Weight Wrestler of the Year award ... followed that with an unblemished 45-0 mark on his way to a second straight state title as a junior ... posted 41-0 mark as a senior en route to third state title ... also is a three-time Reno Tournament of Champions winner and two-time Doc Buchanan champion ... was an offensive and defensive lineman on the Raiders football team as a sophomore and junior ... those two teams won 21 of 26 games ... three-time Nevada All-State Academic team in football ... has finished second in the National High School Coaches Association nationals three times and placed third in the Flonational Tournament at Drexel University in the summer of 2012 ... a two-time Doc Buchanan champion and won the 2011 Reno Worlds ... chose Cal Poly over Princeton, Stanford and Drexel because "I've always had a high standard for education. I need to get grades and then after that worry about athletics, and Cal Poly is a great school for that. That was a big criteria. Then obviously the wrestling part got me there, and Cal Poly is a top 20 school. The weather was great during my visit and I really felt comfortable with all the wrestlers and coaches. At the end of the day, you kind of have to go with what your heart feels and, for me, that was Cal Poly" ... earned an Honors Diploma at Reed High, ranked 14th in his senior class of 414 students and is a National Honors Society member.
