HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Senior Colton Schilling placed eighth at 141 pounds, highlighting Cal Poly's performance in the 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Wrestling Championships on Saturday.
Seeded eighth in his weight class, Schilling posted a 2-1 mark Friday with a pair of pins and a major decision loss.
On Saturday, Schilling pinned fifth-seeded Ryan Diehl of Maryland in 1:40 before dropping a 12-8 decision to 12th-seeded Carter Happel of Iowa. In the match for seventh and eighth place, Schilling fell 10-2 to Yahya Thomas of Northwestern.
Schilling went 3-3 in the two-day tournament and is now 7-5 for the season. The 38-team competition was hosted by Northwestern University and held at the Sears Centre Arena just outside Chicago.
Cal Poly's last place winner at the Midlands was Devon Lotito, who placed seventh at 133 pounds in 2013.
Two other Mustangs were still alive in the wrestle backs Saturday morning.
In the 184-pound division, Sohrab Movahedi fell in a tiebreaker, 2-1, to Kayne MacCallum of Eastern Michigan.
At 197, Tom Lane withdrew against 11th-seeded Pat Brucki of Princeton due to injury default early in the second period.
Iowa claimed the team title with 156.5 points, followed by Rutgers at 109.5 and Central Michigan at 108. Cal Poly placed 24th with 21 points.
Cal Poly returns to action next Thursday with a 7 p.m. dual meet at Fresno State.
