SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly opens Pac-12 Conference dual meet competition Friday night with a home match against Stanford inside Mott Athletics Center.
First of 10 matches begins at 7 p.m. The dual is part of Cal Poly's Alumni and Supporter weekend with several events planned for former Mustang wrestlers and fans.
Cal Poly (0-4) seeks its first dual victory of the season after falling to Northwestern, Fresno State, Penn and Northern Colorado. The Mustangs' dual at Air Force last Sunday was canceled due to the federal government shutdown.
Stanford sports a 4-4 overall mark with wins over CSU Bakersfield, Cal Baptist, Penn and Brown. The Cardinal fell to Virginia Tech, Maryland, Harvard and Arizona State.
Cal Poly and Stanford are meeting for the 60th time Friday night. The Mustangs own a 39-19-1 advantage in the series, though the Cardinal has won the last seven matches, including a 21-9 verdict a year ago during Stanford's Football Fan Fest.
Last week, the NCAA released the first of four coaches' panel rankings for the 2017-18 wrestling season. Cal Poly 141-pounder Colton Schilling is ranked No. 31 at 141 pounds while 197-pounder Tom Lane drew a No. 23 ranking.
Schilling is 9-5 on the year with seven falls and sports a 3-0 mark in dual meets while Lane has compiled a 12-5 record with one fall and is 2-0 in duals.
Though not ranked yet, Mustang 174-pounder Matt Wilhelm (pictured above) is 11-6 on the year with two falls and a 3-1 mark in dual meets. Wilhelm has won nine of his last 11 matches after a 2-4 start.
Stanford has a pair of wrestlers ranked in the top 10 by Intermat. Nathan Butler is ranked No. 5 at 285 pounds with a 20-5 record while Keaton Subjeck, 20-6 for the year, is ranked No. 10 at 174 pounds.
Butler has qualified for the NCAA Championships three times while Subjeck is a two-time NCAA qualifier.
Alumni and Supporter Weekend begins Friday with a pre-match social inside the Tailgate Tent behind Mott Athletics Center at 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, a crab feed benefitting the Mustang wrestling program will be held at the Multi-Activity Center behind Cal Poly's Recreation Center on campus. Cocktail hour begins at 4 p.m., with the dinner and silent auction scheduled for 6 o'clock.
