SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly, which led early 6-5 and was within one point with two bouts to go, eventually dropped a 23-14 decision to Stanford in a Pac-12 Conference dual meet Friday night inside Mott Athletics Center.
Matt Wilhelm and Tom Lane earned decisions to give the Mustangs their early 6-5 lead and, after Stanford won three straight bouts for a 14-6 advantage, Colton Schilling won by technical fall and Joshy Cortez earned a 6-1 decision to bring Cal Poly back to within a point at 15-14.
Stanford captured the final two bouts, however, to win going away, improving to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in Pac-12 duals. Cal Poly fell to 0-5 and 0-1 before an enthusiastic crowd of 621 at the start of Alumni and Supporter Weekend.
Wrestling up a weight class, Wilhelm still managed a 6-3 decision over Austin Flores at 184, scoring a takedown and escape in the first period for a 3-2 lead and adding another escape and takedown for a 6-2 cushion entering the final period. Flores managed only an escape as Wilhelm improved to 12-6 for the season.
Lane blanked David Showunmi 6-0 at 197 pounds, tallying an escape and takedown in the second period and a takedown plus riding time in the final period. Lane is now 13-5 for the year.
At 141, Schilling needed just 2 minutes, 42 seconds, to earn a 16-0 technical fall over Brandon Kier. Schilling scored a takedown, a two-point near fall and a trio of four-point near falls for the win, improving to 10-5.
Cortez followed with his 6-1 decision over Jake Barry at 149, posting a takedown in the second period and an escape, takedown and riding time in the final period to even his record at 9-9.
Stanford's two nationally ranked wrestlers both won their matches. Nathan Butler, ranked No. 5 at 285 pounds, earned an 8-0 major decision while Keaton Subjeck, No. 10 at 174, opened the dual meet with a 25-10 technical fall.
Two other bouts went to the wire.
Yoshito Funakoshi nearly scored a takedown in the final moments of the 125-pound bout but fell 2-1 to Gabe Townsell while Ty Schilling extended Anthony Le to overtime before surrendering a takedown in the sudden victory period of a 3-1 setback.
On Saturday at the California Collegiate Open hosted by San Francisco State, Wyatt Cornelison placed second at 133 pounds, Zander Silva finished second at 141, Seville Haynes was fourth at 285 and Willem DeBoer placed sixth at 197.
Next week Cal Poly wrestles at CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday and at Oregon State on Saturday for two more Pac-12 dual meets.
