Cortez, Lane Reach Quarterfinals in Reno Tournament of Champions

FINAL BRACKETS

RENO, Nevada – Cal Poly 157-pounder Joshy Cortez and 197-pounder Tom Lane reached the quarterfinal round at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday inside the Reno Convention Center.

Cortez (pictured at right) won his first two matches by decision before dropping a narrow 3-2 decision to Jonce Blaylock of Oklahoma State. After two scoreless periods, Cortez earned an escape in the third period before surrendering a takedown and escape.

Cortez was forced to forfeit his next match in the consolation bracket due to injury.

Also at 157, Brawley Lamer rebounded from an early loss in the championship bracket with two falls and a technical fall before he was eliminated in a 17-5 major decision by Joel Romero of Clackamas.

Lane earned a pair of major decisions to get to the quarterfinals, where he fell 10-8 to Isaac Bartel of Montana State-Northern. Lane rallied from a 7-1 deficit with a four-point near fall in the second period and a takedown in the final period to catch Baretel at 7-7 but gave up two points for stalling and an escape in the final minute.

In the wrestlebacks, Lane earned another major decision, 17-8, over Nick May of Michigan State. Needing one more win for placement, Lane was pinned by Brad Wilton, also of Michigan State.

At 149 pounds, Bernie Truax won his first two matches by technical fall and decision to reach the Round of 16 and finished with a 3-2 mark.

Sam Aguilar also was 3-2, earning wins by a major decision in the championship bracket and a pair of falls in the consolation bracket at 285 pounds.

Cal Poly returns to action Dec. 29-30 at the Midlands hosted by Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., just outside Chicago.
