CSU Bakersfield Pulls Away Late for 24-11 Dual Meet Win Over Cal Poly
 
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly built early 4-0 and 7-3 advantages and was within three points with three bouts remaining, but CSU Bakersfield won all three matches down the stretch for a 24-11 victory in a Pac-12 dual meet Friday night inside Mott Athletics Center.
 
Tom Lane and Brawley Lamer earned major decisions and Benny Martinez added a decision for the Mustangs, who fell to 0-3 for the year. CSU Bakersfield improved to 4-4.
 
Competing with seven freshmen, all 10 Cal Poly wrestlers went the distance against their Roadrunner opponent.
 
Lane opened things with an 8-0 shutout against Mark Penyacsek at 197 pounds. He scored a takedown in the first period, a reversal in the second period and a takedown and two-point near fall in the final period for the major, improving to 14-8 on the year.
 
Martinez snapped a 4-4 tie with an escape and takedown in the third period for a 7-4 decision over Eddie Flores at 125. Martinez sports a 7-10 mark.
 
After CSU Bakersfield turned a 7-3 deficit into a 14-7 lead with three straight wins, Brawley Lamer snapped the string with a 14-2 major decision at 157 pounds.
 
Lamer, who has now won seven of his last nine matches, raised his record for the season to 10-9 with his third major decision of the year.
 
Lamer (pictured above in earlier match this season) notched a takedown in the first period and extended his lead over Wyatt Gerl to 8-0 with a reversal and four-point near fall in the second period and finished with a takedown, penalty point, reversal and riding time.
 
Jacob Thalin, Bryan Battisto and Dominic DuCharme all won their matches at 165. 174 and 184 to clinch the victory for the visiting Roadrunners.
 
CSU Bakersfield's two nationally ranked wrestlers also earned victories. No. 118 Sean Nickell was an 8-0 winner at 133 pounds while No. 15Russell Rohlfing earned a 13-1 major decision at 149.
 
The Roadrunners now own a 30-20-2 advantage in their series against Cal Poly dating back to 1974.
 
Cal Poly hosts Northern Colorado next Friday night at 7 p.m. as part of Alumni Weekend.
