Cal Poly to Host Preseason Intrasquad Scrimmage, Westmont Exhibition

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Leading up to its season opener against Marquette, the Cal Poly women's soccer team will host two preseason matches this week at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

First, the Mustangs will hold their annual Green vs. Gold intrasquad scrimmage at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, before facing Westmont in a 7 p.m. exhibition Wednesday, Aug. 8. Admission is free across the board to both preseason events, each of which will feature standard 45-minute halves.

Cal Poly, which returns 20 letterwinners joined by two returning redshirts and an incoming recruiting class of 12 freshmen, starts the regular season hosting Marquette, a 2017 Big East Tournament semifinalist, also at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 16.

Among the returning Mustangs, senior defender Chelsea Barry earned All-West Region third-team honors in 2017, playing 1,786 of a possible 1,795 minutes while anchoring the back line to five shutouts. Barry, who also added one goal and four assists as a junior, enters 2018 five starts away (54) from moving into the top 25 in school history, as well as one assist back of No. 15 all-time at Cal Poly (currently with nine).

Georgina Stiegeler also returns after earning All-Big West Freshman Team accolades as a redshirt forward in 2017. Stiegeler scored three goals and had an assist last year.

The Mustangs, who reported to campus July 30, played 14 games decided by a one-goal differential a year ago (including 12 in a row at one point), finishing 7-9-3 overall; 2-4-2 in conference.

Jessica Johnson and Megan Demijohn, both junior forwards, are also back up top after scoring four and three goals apiece as sophomores. All of Demijohn's scores last season were game-winning goals, ranking No. 2 throughout the Big West.

Sophia Brown is back at goalkeeper, beginning her junior season having made 34 starts while ranking No. 8 all-time for the Mustangs in both save percentage (.769) and career saves (163).

The top four schools in the conference's regular-season standings qualify for the Big West Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 1 (semifinals) and Nov. 4 (the championship match). The Big West table awards 3 points per win and 1 per draw.

Big West action commences Friday, Sept. 28 in Spanos Stadium against CSUN. Defending regular-season champion UC Irvine will host the tournament provided the Anteaters make the four-team field. If, however, UCI doesn't qualify, hosting rights would then go to this year's No. 1 seed, a new format for 2018.
