Cal Poly Closes Preseason With 1-0 Exhibition Win Over Westmont

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. ─ Mackenzie George scored a goal in Alex G. Spanos Stadium for the second time in five days, and it held up Wednesday night as the Cal Poly women's soccer team wrapped up its preseason with a 1-0 exhibition win against Westmont.

Less than four minutes in, George, a freshman from Roseville, Calif. via Woodcreek High, drove into the box before aiming far-post from the left side, beating Warrior keeper Gabi Haw to establish the early lead.

George, who was one of 24 players called to attend the USWNT U-19 training camp this past May, also tallied a preseason goal (61') in the Mustangs' 2-2 Green vs. Gold intrasquad-scrimmage draw on Aug. 4.

Cal Poly controlled possession and created a majority of chances throughout the exhibition, finishing with a 21-5 advantage in total shot attempts, as well as a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Eleven of the Mustangs' shots were on frame, but Haw made 10 saves (plus one goal-preventing stop courtesy of a back) to keep the deficit at a lone goal.

Cal Poly made 19 substitutions for the game, altogether playing 16 backups.

The Mustangs will open the regular season hosting Marquette on Thursday, Aug. 16. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
