Barry Named Preseason All-Conference; Cal Poly Voted 8th in Poll

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly senior defender Chelsea Barry was selected to the Big West Preseason All-Conference Team announced Thursday, and the Mustang women's soccer team was voted eighth in the coaches poll.

Cal Poly tallied 28 points from the voting.

Defending regular-season champion UC Irvine, which collected three first-place ballots, was picked No. 1 with a total of 70 points, ahead of Long Beach State (2 first-place nods along with 68 points) and reigning conference tournament champion Cal State Fullerton (3 first-place predictions included among 65 points).

UC Davis, in fifth with 42 points, accounted for the remaining first-place vote.

Barry earned All-West Region third-team honors in 2017, playing 1,786 of a possible 1,795 minutes while anchoring the back line to five shutouts.

Barry, who also added one goal and four assists as a junior, enters 2018 five starts away (54) from moving into the top 25 in school history, as well as one assist back of No. 15 all-time at Cal Poly (currently with nine).

The Mustangs, who reported to campus July 30, played 14 games decided by a one-goal differential a year ago (including 12 in a row at one point), finishing 7-9-3 overall; 2-4-2 in conference.

Cal Poly, which returns 20 letterwinners joined by two returning redshirts and a recruiting class of 12 freshmen, starts the regular season hosting Marquette, a 2017 Big East Tournament semifinalist, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16.
