Early PK, 3rd-Period Goal Send Fresno St. to Exhibition Win vs. Cal Poly

FRESNO, Calif. — In a preseason exhibition comprised of three 30-minute periods Sunday night, the Fresno State women's soccer team got out to an early lead thanks to a penalty kick, and added another goal in the third period at Bulldog Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium, going on to win 2-0 against visiting Cal Poly.

Freshman Camille Lafaix, who scored in the 81st minute against Westmont on Friday, had the first chance of the evening for the Mustangs, with a shot that sailed wide almost seven minutes in.

Then in the eighth minute, sophomore Madison Williams placed a shot on goal, but Bulldog keeper Valentina Vivas made the save to keep the match scoreless.

The Bulldogs were awarded the penalty opportunity in the 11th minute. Ele Avery, an All-Mountain West second-team honoree as a sophomore in 2018, proceeded to convert from the spot for the lead.

Lafaix would return to test Vivas in the 17th minute, but the freshman from Colombia made the stop. Madison Demijohn, also a freshman (and sister to Megan Demijohn, one of the Mustang goal-scorers in Friday's win), had another opportunity midway through the second period (41'), but her shot lofted wide. Two more freshmen, Olivia Ortiz (who had an assist on Friday) and Annette Greenley, also shot in the 55th & 56th minutes, but both attempts were blocked by the Bulldog back line.

Alyssa Renovato gave the Bulldogs the 2-0 lead, capitalizing on a pass from Megan Amick with a free kick in the 79th minute.

Cal Poly sophomore Ava Dorvillier made the start in goal, denying back-to-back Fresno State shots in the 25th & 26th minutes, before sending back a header in the 39th minute, the first of two more back-to-back saves.

Dorvillier (University City HS/San Diego) — who played 72 minutes in a backup capacity a year ago — added one more save to finish with six for the night.

Cal Poly will wrap up its preseason back at home on Friday evening, hosting the Green vs. White Intrasquad Scrimmage. Admission on Aug. 16 to Alex G. Spanos Stadium is free to all fans regardless of age. Regular-season play kicks off at San Jose State on Thursday, Aug. 22.
