Cal Poly Battles San Jose St. to Scoreless Road Draw to Open Season

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Cal Poly placed a pair of shots on goal during the second overtime period Thursday night, but San Jose State keeper Ariana Romero was in position for crucial saves at each moment, as the Mustang women's soccer team opened its season with a scoreless draw at Spartan Soccer Complex.

Five minutes into double-OT, Cal Poly senior Jordan Patane tested SJSU with a chip from just outside the box, but Romero secured the ball mid-air as it arced in from her right side.

The final Mustang chance came with only 35 seconds remaining, when freshman Nikki Trucco aimed for a golden goal with a left-footed attempt from inside the penalty area. Romero, however, again stepped in front to preserve the mirroring shutout.

Trucco also forced a save in the 10th minute Thursday. In her previous game, the Mustang intrasquad scrimmage on Aug. 16, Trucco, a grad of California High in San Ramon, tallied a goal in the 47th minute.

Cal Poly junior Sydney Spina also placed a shot on target in the 32nd minute, but Romero came up with the save.

Meanwhile, Sophia Brown made five saves for the Mustangs, including a fifth-minute denial of Jamilecxth Becerra, a 2017 Mountain West All-Newcomer selection, as well as a 93rd-minute stop against Alison Gallant to keep the game drawn. It was the 11th career shutout for the senior from Pleasanton, moving her four back from joining a two-way tie for No. 6 in school history. Brown, now with 281 career saves, is 26 shy of No. 2 all-time at Cal Poly in that category.

Sophomore Emily Talmi played a complete 110 minutes in helping to lead the back line to a clean sheet. Cal Poly held a 13-10 advantage in total shot attempts for the night, while corner kicks were even at five apiece.

SJSU, defending MWC Tournament champions, were coming off a scoreless draw to conclude their preseason, going 0-0 with Saint Mary's at an Aug. 15 exhibition.

Cal Poly continues its season-opening road trip heading north to visit Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Hornet Soccer Field, broadcast on WatchBigSky.
