Mustangs Break Even on Day No. 1 of Gaucho Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis program's four entries into the UC Santa Barbara-hosted Gaucho Classic combined to post a 3-3 record in singles and doubles play during the opening round of the three-day competition on Friday.

Kathryn Webb (above) opened her sophomore season with a 6-4, 7-5 sweep of Cal State Northridge's Nigora Sirojiddinova in A Flight singles play. On the other side of the A singles bracket, sophomore Gabrielle Gatewood dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision against top-seeded Veronic Popovici of Wyoming.

In B Flight singles play, sophomore Ane McPike opened her tournament run with a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Colorado State's Veronika Wojakowska. Senior Jocelyn Davis, however, fell against Colorado State's Natalie Heffron, 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles action, Webb remained undefeated after combining with Davis to post an 8-4 A Flight triumph versus Wyoming's Alexandra Kovacs and Jessica Parizher. In B Flight doubles play, Gatewood and McPike fell versus Colorado State's Kaley Schultz and Lauren Mulhern, 8-3.

Saturday play at the Gaucho Classic gets underway at 10 a.m. with doubles action.
